Thailand Postpones the 300 THB Tourist Entry Fee Until Mid-2026
Gaetan Monpas
Thailand has officially delayed the implementation of its long-planned tourist entry fee, originally set at 300 THB, pushing its rollout to mid-2026 at the earliest. This announcement comes after several postponements over the past few years, as the country continues to balance its tourism recovery with broader economic concerns.
A Long-Announced Fee, Now Delayed Again
The Thai government had initially approved the introduction of a 300 THB (approx. 8 USD) entry fee for tourists arriving by air, and 150 THB for those entering via land or sea, with plans for the funds to support a visitor insurance program and tourism infrastructure. After gaining cabinet approval in 2023, the tax faced multiple delays due to logistical issues and industry feedback.
Now, in July 2025, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism has confirmed that the fee will not be introduced before the second or third quarter of 2026, citing the slower-than-expected rebound in international arrivals and global economic uncertainty.
Why Was the Fee Postponed?
Slower Tourism Recovery and Economic Concerns
Thailand, heavily reliant on tourism, has seen a gradual but uneven return of visitors since reopening its borders. Authorities are concerned that additional costs—however minimal—might discourage travelers during this sensitive recovery phase.
According to recent statements from tourism officials:
“Implementing the fee at this time could be counterproductive. We want to ensure that visitors feel welcome and that the process is smooth and cost-effective.”
Additionally, the government is awaiting the full rollout of the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), a new electronic travel form introduced in May 2025, before coupling it with any entry-related charges.
What Is the TDAC?
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is a mandatory online form that all international visitors must complete before entering the country. It replaces some of the former immigration paperwork and helps streamline the entry process. Importantly, TDAC is free and not tied to the proposed entry fee—at least for now.
What Tourists Need to Know (As of July 2025)
No entry fee is currently required to enter Thailand as a tourist.
The TDAC is mandatory and must be completed before arrival.
The tourist entry fee (300 THB) is not expected before mid-2026.
No additional taxes are collected at airports or borders related to this measure.
What Will the Fee Be Used For?
Once implemented, the entry fee is expected to fund:
Travel insurance coverage for all incoming tourists (emergency care, accidents)
Maintenance and development of tourist attractions
Promotion and infrastructure improvements in key destinations
Who Will Be Exempt?
The proposed fee will not apply to:
Thai nationals
Diplomats and official passport holders
Children under 2 years old
Transit passengers
Some holders of valid work permits (to be confirmed)
Conclusion
For now, travelers can continue to enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry into Thailand without any additional fee beyond visa costs (if applicable). While the 300 THB entry fee remains a part of Thailand’s long-term tourism strategy, its implementation has been placed on hold until at least mid-2026.
As always, make sure to complete your TDAC form online before departure, and stay updated on immigration and travel rules through official sources.
